How to Write an Article and Get Paid

How do you become an article writer? What kind of article writer can you be? How much do article writers get paid? These are all questions I’ve answered, by writing a blog post about this subject in order to share what I’ve learned about becoming an article writer, writing articles for money, and getting your own article writing business started up.

What is article writing?

Article writing is a popular form of content writing that people use for many different reasons. From Wikipedia entries on very niche topics, to large company blogs with hundreds of articles, there are always new things being written all over the Internet.

The most important thing about becoming an article writer is that you understand your audience’s needs so that you can provide them with what they want. Since you’re being paid for each word you write, it’s also important to ensure your work is absolutely perfect. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to write an article and get paid!

If you’re looking for a side gig that allows you to work from home, writing articles might be just what you’re looking for. One of the most popular freelancing jobs, it can prove to be lucrative if you can find work.

However, article writing is just one piece of content writing—you may also need additional skills like web design or photography in order to land your first job. Still curious about how to become an writer? Let’s learn!

1- Find Your Niche

Because articles are so easily syndicated, you can write multiple versions of a piece (on varying topics) and earn residual income. You may never write that one viral post, but with persistence, you could potentially make enough via your network of sites to quit your day job.

It doesn’t hurt that people need content—especially well-written, in-depth information on niche topics. This is where demand is high but supply is low, meaning it’s easier for you to stand out from a large crowd of freelancers fighting for projects as well as clients looking for quality work.

2- Optimize Your Work Environment

One way to optimize your work environment is to treat it like a professional environment. That might sound silly, but take a moment to think about how many times you’ve sat in front of your computer for hours on end with pants that look like they’ve been worn for weeks, surrounded by empty coffee cups (or worse) and garbage.

You spend a lot of time at your desk, so make sure you feel comfortable. A clean workspace makes it easier for you to focus on getting things done. It’s worth taking some time out of each day—or even just 15 minutes before your start working—to do a quick clean-up job.

3- Learn From Others

The most effective strategy I’ve found for learning how to write articles is by following influencers in my niche and seeing what they’re doing. You don’t have to fully adopt their style, but seeing what they’re posting on a daily basis is a great way to pick up some techniques.

It also gives you fresh content ideas! If you find someone whose writing style you enjoy, reach out and ask them about their process—you may even score some free tips.

4- Use Grammarly

Grammarly’s AI-powered proofreading has been a godsend for freelance writers. It catches more than 250 types of grammatical errors, meaning I can be confident that my work is as polished as possible. I love how Grammarly presents corrections right within my text. Instead of having to edit line by line, I can fix issues in bulk.

And if it ever comes across something unfamiliar—like American vs British English—it gives me a quick definition right in its suggestions! For example, What are you looking at? becomes What are you looking at? Grammarly quickly notes that while they’re both technically correct depending on context, looking at is preferred in American English whereas looking at is used primarily in British English.

5- Become Efficient at Writing

With a little practice, anyone can learn how to write articles. It may seem difficult in the beginning, but with good tutorials and practice you’ll get there. The process of writing has a few steps: you will find your idea for a piece, research it, write it down on paper or digitally using word processing software, edit it into its final form and then publish or send it out. You have just started your career as an author!

6- Start with Small Projects, then Move Up

When you’re just starting out, it’s a good idea to take some small projects on. These can be writing-related or not; for example, maybe you want to edit some short pieces for a website or local publication. By taking on these smaller jobs, you’ll get valuable experience, help other people out, and build your portfolio at the same time.

Once you have that first paid piece of work behind you (and your client is happy), it will help open up doors if they need someone again in future; they’ll remember working with someone they like! And most importantly of all: make sure your client knows how hardworking you are! They might have more work coming up down the line.

Know When You Need Help

when you need help in article writing

Learning how to become a freelance writer can be easy—but actually starting your freelance writing career is hard. Most freelancers encounter some form of writer’s block at some point, but it’s not necessarily something you have to fight through on your own.

If you need help in getting started or need advice on where to find clients, there are lots of resources available for freelance writers: from small websites dedicated to helping freelancers find work (like Freelance Writing Gigs), to forums like Reddit that feature weekly Freelance Friday topics. No matter what sort of writer you are or what sort of problems you face when trying to get clients, there’s someone out there who has dealt with similar issues and is willing to offer advice.

Charge the Right Amount of Money

Overcharging your clients is a quick way to scare them away. If you price yourself too high, they might be turned off by your cost—but if you price yourself too low, they might think your service isn’t worth what you’re charging. It’s difficult to find that sweet spot between undercutting and overcharging, but it can also make or break a business.

To start, consider if there are similar businesses in your area offering similar services; often times people will pay more for a service they know they can trust (you), as opposed to going with an unknown entity who charges less than you do. And remember: customers typically believe that lower prices mean better quality—which is not always true!

Use SEO While Writing

By including keywords in your content, you help search engines understand what you’re trying to say. There are two primary ways of using SEO when writing: keyword density and keyword interlinking. Keyword density refers to how many times a certain keyword appears within a page or post (you want it to be no more than 2-3 percent of your total word count).

Keyword interlinking is similar, but it involves how often specific terms appear on your site’s pages; for example, if you’re trying to sell handbags online, you’ll want to make sure that your handbag term shows up when referencing other products (e.g., purses, wallets) as well as lifestyle content that’s relevant.
